I endeavor to make Read To Self (portion of the day when children read independently in the classroom) an authentic experience for my 2nd graders. Even after they've submitted to the rigors of my classroom management and are dutifully reading during the designated time, it feels like cheating to use this calm and quiet time to enter grades, steward data, or set up for the next lesson. If I'm to convince them reading is as important as I say it is, shouldn't I be reading too? Besides, I like reading. I read while they read. It makes any shushing I do based on a greater urgency than simple compliance. I'm reading too, you know? You gotta be quiet!

I've read most of Gene Wolfe's science fiction/fantasy epic Book Of The New Sun during Read To Self sessions. Wolfe's universe looms large on this recording but is filtered through the lens of children's literature and NES soundtracks. As an end of the year project, my students will spend one week on each track, composing a chapter of their own Book Of The New Bunny using only the titles, music, and artwork as inspiration. I'm not going to be teaching any lessons on the Dying Earth subgenre, but it's important for children to see adults excited about something. I operate under the assumption that even if they can't articulate it verbally, they can tell when you're phoning it in.
